Senior Living

Boulders on the Green

Many people see Las Cruces as a hub for Senior Living or even go as far as to call it a retirement community. The weather in Las Cruces is ideal for many, as it rarely snows, and the hot temperatures only rise during the summer months. Boulders on The Green is an exclusive community for residents age 55 and up. It is a beautiful community with a golf course, club house with pool and jacuzzi, and many more amenities. The gated neighborhood is safe, and serene, with many of the residents having become friends and engaging in regular group activities.

Munson Center

The City of Las Cruces has a very extensive Senior ProgramLena Reta, Human Services Assistant at Munson Center, is passionate about helping the seniors of the Las Cruces community to improve their quality of life. Her job is to help seniors find and maneuver through the steps of programs such as Medicaid, Medicare, food stamps, financial assistance, and housing, just to name a few. Having worked for the City of Las Cruces for 23 years, Lena was excited to tell us all about the Munson Center and the work they do there. Over 200 seniors utilize Munson Center on a regular basis. They offer many classes at a low cost, between 6 and 12 dollars, teaching pottery, jewelry making, quilting, knitting, and stained glass, as well as many others. They have dances there about once a month, usually themed for the holidays. Monday through Friday the center has lunch available for seniors at a suggested donation of 2.50. This hot meal is always healthy and is even available to those who cannot make it into the center, through their Meals on Wheels program, which always includes breakfast for the following morning. Home Care is available through the City of Las Cruces as well, a free service providing two to three hours a day of care, depending on the need, one to two times a week. Respite is available to families caring for those with Alzheimer’s, or dementia. The center is always growing and adding new things to their programs. This past year they added a large recreation room to their building. Another somewhat new addition would be their beautiful garden, where they grow many different types of food, such as asparagus, radishes, squash, lettuces, eggplant, chiles, onions, and tomatoes. It is a great way for volunteers and seniors to come together to learn and grow health foods that they then use right there in their center for their hot lunches. They even make their own salsa! During seasons where they have an overflow of greens, they have a salad bar spread. Munson Center is a great place to gain support, learn new things, and socialize.
